MK-7, the superior form of vitamin K2
This product contains 180 mcg of vitamin K2 in the form of menaquinone-7 (MK-7). Vitamin K2, or menaquinone (abbreviated MK), occurs in various forms, the most well-known being MK-4, MK-7, MK-8, and MK-9. The number mentioned after 'MK' refers to the length of the side chain in the molecule. According to current scientific understanding, menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is the most effective form of vitamin K2. MK-7 is excellently absorbed and remains in the body for a very long time, thanks to its long half-life. This is why MK-7 can be effective at relatively low dosages.
Trans-form versus cis-form
MK-7 occurs in two forms (isomers): the natural trans-form and the synthetic cis-form†. The body can only utilize the natural trans-form, just as MK-7 occurs in food. Scientists therefore consider the trans-form to be the only biologically active form of MK-7. The cis-form, on the other hand, does not occur in nature and is not effective, and could potentially even put an unnecessary strain on the body. This Vitals product contains more than 99.7% of the natural trans-form.
Sources of vitamin K2
MK-7 is produced by certain bacteria during fermentation and occurs naturally mainly in natto, a Japanese dish consisting of fermented soybeans. Natto has a strong, characteristic taste and is therefore not as popular in Western cuisine. Other menaquinones, such as MK-8 and MK-9, occur in smaller quantities, particularly in quark and hard cheeses.
