Source of gamma linolenic acid
Evening primrose oil is a natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid that is rarely found in food. The body can, in principle, produce GLA itself from (cis)linoleic acid. However, in situations where there is an increased need, it may be beneficial to supplement the diet with a GLA supplement. Factors that can play a role in this include excessive consumption of trans fatty acids, saturated fats, sugar, alcohol, and carbohydrates.
