Curcumin is one of the most well-known and widely used herbal preparations. It is the main active ingredient in turmeric, an aromatic spice from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. Curcumin-SLCP™: A Technological Breakthrough
The biggest challenge in developing curcumin preparations with optimal efficacy is overcoming the problems with its absorption and bioavailability. Curcumin in its "raw" form is rapidly converted in the intestines and liver after oral administration into inactive metabolites, such as curcumin glucuronide, which are quickly excreted from the body. How is Curcumin-SLCP™ absorbed into the body?
Normally, curcumin is absorbed in the same way as most other nutrients (e.g., sugars and amino acids). In the intestinal epithelium, an initial enzymatic conversion of biologically active curcumin into curcumin glucuronide, an inactive metabolite, already occurs. The curcumin then travels via the portal vein to the liver, where it is further inactivated and then excreted relatively quickly. However, Curcumin-SLCP™ utilizes an alternative route of absorption into the body. Due to its unique lipid coating, it is recognized by the body and treated in the same way as other long-chain dietary fats. These are incorporated into chylomicrons (transport particles) in the intestinal cells and transported via the lymphatic system into the bloodstream. These chylomicrons initially bypass the liver but are transported via the blood to various tissues and organs, where they release their contents under the influence of a fat-splitting enzyme (lipoprotein lipase). The curcumin in the chylomicron remains in its biologically active form, also called "free" curcumin. In this form, it is released from the chylomicron and absorbed into tissues and organs where it can exert its effects. Biologically active (free) curcumin itself is a lipid-like substance and can thus even cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike its inactive metabolites, and support the functioning of the central nervous system.
Absorption versus bioavailability
The bioavailability of a particular substance is often discussed. This refers to the maximum blood level (Cmax) reached at a specific time after oral ingestion of a nutrient. Bioavailability is part of bioavailability, but it certainly doesn't tell the whole story. A nutrient can be absorbed very well and quickly reach a very high blood level, but then be broken down very quickly and eliminated from the body without having sufficient time to take effect. It's important to also consider the development of the blood level over time, not just the moment at which the maximum blood level is reached. What matters is how long the nutrient has been present in the blood in its biologically active form and how long it has had the opportunity to exert its effects. This reflects bioavailability, which is defined as the portion of a nutrient that has been absorbed into the body and is available for use in specific bodily processes.
