Choline has long been an undervalued (vitamin B-like) nutrient. But more and more is now known about it. In 2012, the European Commission determined that three health claims for choline could be considered scientifically proven. It was established that it is important for normal lipid metabolism, normal homocysteine metabolism, and healthy liver function. And in 2016, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruled that choline is an essential nutrient that the body cannot produce in sufficient quantities and must be obtained largely from food. The adequate intake in Europe was set at 400 mg/day for adults, based on the average intake in European countries. For pregnant women, 480 mg/day is recommended, and for breastfeeding women, 520 mg/day is even recommended. In 2016, an adequate intake was also established for the first time in the United States. However, this is based on clinical research specifically designed to determine the daily requirement (sufficient for a healthy liver), and it was determined to be 550 mg/day. The average intake of adults in Europe ranges from 291 to 468 mg/day.
Synergy
Choline has important synergistic effects with vitamins B6, B12, folate, and SAMe. Furthermore, phosphatidylcholine produced via the SAMe-dependent metabolic pathway is enriched with DHA, thus forming phosphatidylcholine-DHA. Choline and DHA interact synergistically.
