Blood Lipids
Blood lipids are fats transported in the blood to their target tissues. These mainly consist of cholesterol and triglycerides. The term 'cholesterol' comes from the Greek cholè, meaning 'bile', and stereos 'solid'. Indeed, cholesterol is one of the building blocks of bile, but it is also extremely important for the formation of cell membranes, various hormones, and vitamin D. Triglycerides play a role in energy production in the cell and form a protective fat layer around organs. For all these blood lipids, blood levels are strictly regulated so that they do not become too high or too low.
