L-Lysine is classified as an essential amino acid, meaning our body cannot produce it from other amino acids. Therefore, for adequate L-lysine levels, we are entirely dependent on intake through diet. This can pose a problem especially for vegetarians and vegans. The essential amino acid is mainly found in animal proteins; meat and dairy are the primary sources.
