Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful antioxidants nature has to offer. The substance is produced by algae, plankton, and various microorganisms. Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoids, natural pigments responsible for the yellow, orange, and red colors in fruits and vegetables.
The richest natural source of astaxanthin is Haematococcus pluvialis, also known as blood rain algae due to its deep red color. Animals that consume these algae acquire a distinctive pinkish-red hue. Examples include salmon, lobster, crab, trout, and shrimp. Some birds, such as flamingos, also ingest this pigment.

Algae produce astaxanthin to protect themselves from stressful conditions like drought and sunlight in the summer. This enables the algae to protect their DNA, allowing them to grow again under better conditions.

Completely sustainable production process
The entire production is powered by solar energy. In addition, underground seawater is used during the production process, eliminating the need for drinking water. This water is then recycled by 80%. The AstaPure® production process is therefore completely sustainable.
Green and red phase
Production proceeds in two phases that mimic the accumulation of astaxanthin in nature. In the green phase, algae enjoy optimal natural growth conditions, allowing them to grow maximally. In the red phase, the algae are exposed to harsh conditions, causing them to produce astaxanthin as a defense mechanism.
