Sandalwood is a tree with aromatic wood and roots native to India and Indonesia. Sandalwood is inextricably linked to its native India, where it is processed into incense, fragrant carvings, and essential oil; authentic, pure sandalwood oil is traded at government auctions. Along with Indonesia, India produces 90% of the world's sandalwood, primarily in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The oil content of sandalwood is approximately 4% in the heartwood and about 6% in the roots. Sandalwood is a valuable raw material for perfumery.
