Iris is a perennial plant with sword-shaped blue flowers that is now cultivated primarily in Italy. The iris plant is named after the goddess of the rainbow (iris). In ancient Rome and Greece, iris was already valued as a flavoring and medicinal plant for treating skin and respiratory discomfort. Iris is used as a fixative in cosmetics and perfumery; it is one of the most valuable fragrances in the world because its production is complex: after peeling, chopping, and drying, a careful storage process lasts three years, after which further processing takes place.
