Propolis is a naturally sticky substance made by bees from the resins of tree buds.
The buds of trees are protected from outside infections by these resins until they are ready to sprout.
Bees chew small amounts of resin from the buds of trees such as birch and poplar. Resin from conifers, junipers, and spruces has also been found in propolis.
This means that propolis is constantly changing in composition and resistance will not develop quickly.
Bees process the resin by adding enzymes and ferment it from their saliva into propolis and transport it in their pollen baskets on their hind legs to the beehive.
The sticky substance is then extracted by other bees. They then mix the propolis with pollen and beeswax.
The propolis is systematically applied to each honeycomb, where it has a protective effect for a long time.
