Astaxanthin is a carotenoid.
Carotenoids, also called tetraterpenoids, are yellow, orange, and red organic pigments produced by plants and algae, as well as various bacteria and fungi. Carotenoids give pumpkins, carrots, corn, tomatoes, and even flamingos their characteristic color.
These characteristic colors have a function. They are produced by the aforementioned plants and organisms to protect themselves from the harmful effects of oxygen and sunlight.

There is one organism in the world that contains the highest concentration of astaxanthin, namely the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis.
