The Auricularia mushroom owes its German name, "Judas' Ear," to a Christian legend. According to this legend, Judas hanged himself from an elderberry tree, the type of tree on which the Auricularia often grows. The combination of this legend and the ear-shaped fruiting bodies gave rise to the name "Judas' Ear."
