Bearberry leaf ground from Jacob Hooy. The bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a plant from the heather family (Ericaceae). The bearberry is a dwarf shrub 30–60 cm tall in the Netherlands, with creeping stems that ascend at the top. The shiny, green, obovate leaves remain on the plant for one to three years. The dwarf shrub flowers from March to April. The white or pink flowers are in short, overhanging clusters. The berries are red. They are eaten by birds, but are poisonous to humans.
