Myrtle is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of flowers, leaves, and twigs. Myrtus communis is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall. It has glossy, oval leaves that, when crushed, release a scent strongly resembling juniper. Aromatic white flowers appear in spring, followed by blue-black berries. In ancient Greece, myrtle was sacred to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Myrtle is still used in bridal bouquets in the Middle East. The essential oil yield for myrtle is 0.5-1%. This means that between 100 and 200 kg of plant material are needed to produce 1 liter of oil. The distilled oil is light yellow to brownish orange in color and has a unique fragrance. This fragrance is spicy with notes of camphor and eucalyptus. The oil becomes sweeter when the flowers are distilled with it.
In France, myrtle is used as a flavoring.
