Glutathione is the body's most important antioxidant. However, the body's own glutathione production can be reduced for various reasons, such as stress, a poor diet, medications, intense exercise, and aging. Supporting glutathione production in the body is desirable in such situations.
Glutathione (GSH) exists in three forms: S-acetyl-glutathione, reduced glutathione, and glutathione disulfide (oxidized form). Glutathione is difficult to absorb. Therefore, the S-acetyl-glutathione form is best used to increase glutathione levels. Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that occurs naturally in the human body. Alpha-lipoic acid is a molecule found in the mitochondria of every cell.
Our bodies produce small amounts of R-alpha-lipoic acid. In addition, the natural, endogenous R-form of alpha-lipoic acid is found in small amounts in foods, such as liver, spinach, and broccoli.
