Muesli is a popular breakfast food consisting of oatmeal and (dried) fruit, eaten with milk or yogurt. Yogurt with muesli can also be enjoyed as a dessert.
Muesli was developed in 1900 by the Swiss physician Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner as a dietary food for his patients. Dr. Bircher-Benner was one of the first nutritionists to attribute lifestyle diseases to a diet that was no longer Lebensfrisch, or fresh from nature. He based his diet on a vegetarian approach. His theory, in short, was that the human body thrives and recovers best by eating raw and minimally processed fruits, seeds, and vegetables.
